Part Time Lactation Consultant

The San Diego Breastfeeding Center is looking to hire an IBCLC (either current or pending) as an independent contractor.  This is a fast-paced, dynamic job with lots of opportunity to use your lactation skills in diverse and innovative ways.  As a private practice lactation office, we are able to build meaningful relationships with our families, providing continuity of care throughout their breastfeeding journeys. Weekly hours will range from 12 hours to 18 hours per week.  Must be available to see patients a few weekends a month.  Visits will take place in the client’s home, as well as in our office in Hillcrest. Applicants must have own gram-sensitive scale and laptop computer. Additional supplies will be provided.

  1. IBCLC in good standing or IBCLC-pending.  If IBCLC-pending, must have completed lactation consultant training through UCSD's lactation program.

  2. Must be enthusiastic, empathetic, comfortable working with families of diverse backgrounds, have a passion for learning, and have a flexible personality.

  3. Must be very computer-literate, as all charting is on the computer.

  4. Knowledge in assessing for tongue ties, lip ties, oversupply, low milk supply, thrush, torticollis/asymmetry, supplementation needs, etc.

  5. Knowledge in using tube/syringe or tube/bottle as a temporary SNS.

  6. Comfortable recommending alternative therapies, such as herbal remedies, chiropractic care, craniosacral therapy, etc.  (Applicants may be unfamiliar with these therapies, but must be willing to learn about them and feel comfortable referring out to holistic practitioners.)

  7. Willingness to use our online charting system.  We are completely paperless and will provide training in this area.

  8. Available for a one-month paid internship to learn our online charting system, as well as our protocols.

  9. Good communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills are a must.

At the San Diego Breastfeeding Center, we pride ourself in offering judgment-free breastfeeding support, so applicants must be willing to discuss formula supplementation, bottle feeding, as well as combo feeding, without judgment.
